QCon 2008 : Wednesday

The first day of the conference. Great feeling. After buying a couple of books for the folks back at Cognifide, I quickly settled down for the opening keynote by Eric Gamma on How Eclipse changed my view on Software Development.

I was a little bit disappointed by the talk, most probably because I was expecting a little bit too much. The first part of the talk was about the Eclipse way of doing application development that offered some very interesting insights into how the Eclipse team delivers software. Then the latter part of the talk degenerated into a product overview of Jazz and finally a live demo. I realised I had switched off when I found myself looking up the next session on my daily schedule. Don’t get me wrong, Jazz looks great and I love the implementation of a project dashboard, but it was a step too far for me in the tool-oriented approach to software development. We’ll see eh…

For the rest of the day I pretty much kept to the cloud computing track. Jeff Barr from Amazon gave a great talk, fielding a number of tough questions with relative ease from someone clearly confident in their service offering. GData from Google and Yahoo Pipes where interesting as there were relatively new to me, and the track day was nicely rounded off with a panel of the speakers. I recommend downloading the Amazon slides.

Unfortunately for me, I had to missed the evening discussion on ‘Does my bus look big in this’. You can get the slides but I’ve been told you really should wait for video that I hope will be available on the InfoQ site soon!
