Most successful (successful meaning that their utility continues to grow long after the initial post implementation enthusiasm) wikis that I know have someone (or a small group of individuals) who are responsible for its success as a resource.  They take the time to curate the wiki by improving pages and encouraging those who contribute.  Wikipedia has a group of dedicated and loyal contributors that constantly monitor new updates.   Without that core, it would fail.</description>
