Problems with Windows Workflow Foundation

On one of our latest projects we decided to trial run WWF on the .NET 3.0 Platform as it was a natural architectural fit for our customer’s solution. However, after a number of attempts, we had to back out and revert to our first solution. The reason: the hosting environment for WWF based applications is immature. It is not easy to pass data between the environment and the embedded workflows. Don’t get me wrong, there are ways to do this, but they basically end up as tailored hacks. This was unfortunate. There were a couple of other workarounds we had to put in place, but as these mounted up, the confidence quickly dropped. We ditched WWF.
However, we know that Microsoft are addressing these issues in its forthcoming release of .NET 3.5 which is now in beta. Unfortunately, this release is not aligned with our customer’s ship date. In .NET 3.5 there is a new WWF hosting environment. Surprise, surprise. But that’s the nature of the beast I guess…
I had a major set back in my training for the Poznan marathon. After the end of the 4th mile of a planned 6 mile run, my knee gave way. I have to stay off it for a week and start slowly, slowly again. No running. No skipping. No dancing! If this continues I’m only going to manage the first mile of the marathon. I feel as though I’m going backwards. Hey ho!
