Agile Certification – Friend or Foe

There has been more and more debate around agile certification, with many arguments for and against it.  Now I have just become a Certified Scrum Master by attending a 2-day course.  The course was informative and valuable, but you’ve got to take for what it is.  It’s a course which at the end of it you get a piece of paper stating that you have had 2 days worth of knowledge transfer to supplement and/or compliment what you already know. 

 

My take on employing someone is that you always do your due diligence.  If they are certified, then during the hiring process, if behind that certification is a key skill for the position that you’re trying to fill, you need to test for that.  If you don’t, and you simply accept at face value that certification, then that is the risk you take.  Personally, I never would.  Equally, I don’t tend to screen people out if they don’t have a certification.  However, I’m only speaking from a position in the software industry…
